The decision
Which name and package best communicate what this drink is for?
A beverage team had multiple names and design directions, but needed a clearer basis for choosing what to test with real shoppers. Arcana supported a research partner’s client engagement.
The approach
From evidence to next steps.
Explore the names
Five synthetic studies compared naming options. One candidate led twice, but the margins were modest and the headline format was shared across both wins.
Read the package
Twelve design concepts were coded from the artwork. Three packages were then assessed alongside six shelf competitors.
Make it testable
Twenty-nine predictions were logged ahead of a planned 600-person shelf study, creating a record to compare with real-world findings.
What the work revealed
The product had protein. The descriptor didn’t say so.
Every design used a milkshake descriptor; none used protein in that descriptor. The analysis identified a gap between the product’s nutritional proposition and the message shoppers would see first.
The next move
Carry the leading name forward as a candidate, not a proven winner. Test a clearer protein descriptor, a prominent protein claim and an unmistakable dairy cue within a calm, adult visual identity.
Evidence, in context
What this case does—and doesn’t—show.
- The naming exercises used simulated audiences, not a representative consumer survey. Some requested segments lacked dedicated personas.
- The design round was a coded assessment of artwork, not audience-test results.
- The 29 predictions await field validation. No sales lift or confirmed market preference is claimed.
